The final two (of 10) races of the evening brought excitement to Meridian Street as champions were crowned in the Men’s and Women’s Elite Race Divisions. Linus Kiplagat was victorious in an elite men’s mile that featured the 2017 champion, Connor Claflin. Kiplagat’s winning time of 4:08.7, edged Isaac Mukunda’s runner-up posting of 4:10.7. Jamie Morrissey, an NCAA Division I All American from University of Michigan and the 2018 Big 10 800m Champion, defended her title in 4:57.3, just ahead of Margaret Wamahiga’s time of 5:00.0.
The USA Track & Field Indiana One Mile Road Champions were also crowned at the event. The men’s division winner was Connor Claflin in a time of 4:15.1, while the women’s champion was Sarah Pease in 5:01.3. Master’s division winners were Mike Cole in a time of 4:46 and Lucie Mays-Suleski in a time of 5:33.
The biggest winner of the evening was local public education. Beyond Monumental made donations totaling $152,500. Organizations receiving donations were: IPS Education Foundation ($115,000), Simon Youth Foundation ($15,000), Teachers’ Treasures ($15,000) and Lawrence Township School Foundation ($7,500)
In addition, the Apex Monumental Challenge, a corporate health and wellness program started by the Beyond Monumental and Apex Benefits Group, saw the 2017 winners crowned. Winning companies included Indianapolis City Market (very small employer category), The International Center (small employer category), CliftonLarsenAllen (medium employer category) and CNO Financial Group (large employer category).

Beyond Monumental’s event main event, the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, will have it’s eleventh running this year on Saturday, November 3rd. Registration is open online.
